Is it time for a 4-day workweek?

Some companies are already leading the way – four days working, three days off. The concept of a four-day workweek is becoming increasingly popular among the general public. But what advantages does it offer to the employers and what regulations regarding working hours need to be complied with?

The term 4-day workweek is applied when the weekly workload is regularly spread over four days. In the course of such a work model, the normal daily working time can be extended to up to 10 hours. However, it must be taken into account that some collective agreements only permit the extension to a regular working time up to 10 hours in the case of contiguous blocks of the four working days

With regard to the shortage of qualified workers on the labor market in particular, the introduction of a 4-day week offers an enormous potential for many companies. In addition to improving employer attractiveness, the increase in employee satisfaction has been proven to reduce fluctuation rates within companies. According to recent studies, the reduction of working days makes employees significantly more productive and results in fewer sick days.

Nevertheless, this work model is not suitable for all areas of work. In particular, production-intensive companies can only marginally benefit from the increase in employee performance due to the already existing maximum capacity utilization. In this case, however, it is advisable to think about introducing a 5-shift system ( ) in order to reduce the workload of employees while maintaining the full production capacity.
